I have a passion for metals. The infinitude of metallurgy, processing, conservation and eventual degradation of metals and their alloys fascinate me. I want to see it first, then I'll believe it.
Klaas studied Conservation and Restoration Sciences at Artesis College Antwerp (now part of University of Antwerp). Additionally, he attended evening classes in blacksmithing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp for six years. His study of traditional metalworking techniques took him to blacksmiths all over the world, from Australia to Siberia. With this passion, he became a laureate of the Vocatio Foundation in 2012.
A scholarship granted by King Baudouin Foundation allowed him to carry out an extensive research project on patination techniques for bronzes. (a.o. with Patrick Kipper in Colorado USA)
Practical skills in metalworking, combined with extensive knowledge of materials and a strong theoretical background, are his greatest strengths.
