The stormy ocean brought to tranquility
The statue The Ocean was made in 1955 as a crowning piece for the iconic Kursaal Oostende. After just a few years, the statue was moved to the fountain on the Leopold II lane. The surface of the statue was completely disgraced with stripes of discolouration caused by bird feces and an uneven patina.
The statue was dismantled from its spot in the middle of the fountain and transported for treatment in the workhouse. After a thorough cleaning, the surface was partly (re-)patinated with mild solutions in order to reduce the splotchy and contrasting colours and achieve an even patina.
The statue was finished by applying a layer of wax, after which it was put back on its spot in the fountain.
