Marquetry which makes you want to pull off your shoes
The pavilion, which faces the water, was built by duke Wolfgang-Guillaume d'Ursel between 1792 and 1797, and was meant as a country residence.
The magnificent view from the 'salon rond' (or 'salon à l'italienne') is no less impressive than the spectacular marquetry flooring in the room. The parquet floor is made out of a variety of exclusive wood species, such as maple, ebony and rosewood. Damage because of wood-boring insects and earlier restorations in combination with maintenance works, have put the floor in disarray.
An overview of pieces to be treated was made in consultation with the client. The selected pieces were carefully removed, without damaging the surrounding wood. Thanks to meticulous drawings, all pieces were reconstructed in their original wood species. After gluing, the inlay pieces were scraped to level the floor. Finally, we coloured the pieces and finished the entire parquet floor with a layer of wax.
