Movable bridges, Port of Antwerp-Bruges

A material display of the industrial revolution which took place in the Antwerp harbour.

The Antwerp ports history is long and shows a lot of changes and developments. This shows in their unique collection of movable bridges. The 23 remaining bridges span a period of over 150 years.

In order to form a thorough understanding of every individual bridge, an extensive research project was undertaken by Remmen BV. During the study, we were able to unravel the history of every bridge.

With the archival research forming a solid basis, we undertook an investigation into the material and technical properties of each bridge. During the study, the present state and materials of the bridges were compared to the information dug up during the historical study. This information could be combined with an extensive comparative study concerning movable bridges in other regions worldwide in order to value the bridges in a substantiated and justified manner. The resulting valuation contributed to an actualized policy for the management of this valuable, industrial heritage.
