A monumental tribute to the city's patron saint.
Saint Martin's Church in Aalst is a fine example of the Brabant Gothic Style in Eastern Flanders, housing a fantastic interior that matches the impressive exterior facades. Because the church interior was high due a general restoration, an extensive investigation of the different interior elements was carried out.
After concluding the historical and iconographical study of the objects, we carried out extensive research of the original materials and techniques used in constructing the various items. Afterwards, the various deterioration phenomena to both medium and finishing layers were charted in a visually comprehensive manner. In some cases interventions could be dated through comparison between historical descriptions or images and damage currently present.
Based on this, we drew up a tailor-made treatment concept and specific proposal for each individual object. Our preliminary investigations form the basis for the specifications for the restoration treatment of these interior elements.
