Secular architecture on a monumental scale
Withing the context of restoration works of the site, the tithe barn on the castle grounds of Heers was subjected to a detailed research project.
The tithe barn, which was probably built around the beginning of the 16th century, has already undergone some remodeling and changes during its long history. A concise, historical study gave some indications as to the history of the barn.
The wooden construction was studied, during which all components were named according to ruling terminology. Tally marks, which were found on all (historical) parts, were documented and checked. Based on this, a general description and overview of the most important parts of the construction could be drawn up.
Subsequently, the wooden construction could be checked on-site. All accessible parts were studied and evaluated in detail, using, among other things, a resistance drill. Using these techniques, we could draw up damage pictures which should provide an overview of the different deterioration factors and problem zones.
Using this overview, we defined a concept of restoration and treatment plan which should serve as a guideline for the upcoming restoration of the barn.
