A hidden view on a centuries-old church.
Hidden above the 18thcentury, gothic cross-ribbed vault in Saint Martin's Church Zaventem, is an early 17thcentury barrel vault, complete with historical plastering and even wall paintings. The painting has been partially preserved and probably pictures the Last Supper.
The vault has been preserved in a relatively intact state of repair. In order to evaluate the internal structure of the wood however, a brief investigation was carried out. The state of the wood was mapped using resistance drilling in order to determine the hardness and internal condition of the material.
The technical examination and resistance drilling, served as a basis to map the problematic areas. The top of the vault was thoroughly cleaned in order to improve the climate underneath the roof. Certain beams proved to be in critical condition and were immediately replaced or restored.
