Iconic halls on the banks of the river Scheldt
The halls or sheds are a defining feature on the Scheldt quays. The canopies were erected during construction works on the river at the end of the 19th to facilitate dock activities and store goods.
In preparation of the restoration of the halls on the Jordaens quay, a research project was started in order to optimize the treatment plans. A first step was to chart all deterioration of the halls. Both the columns and their base, as well as the canopies and frontons were thoroughly investigated.
We considered the different treatment possibilities for the mapped damage. A few welding tests were carried out in order to assess different creative restoration methods. These trial pieces were analyzed in order to evaluate their applicability and efficiency. A stratigraphical study was undertaken in order to specify the original finishing layers of the structure. In addition, we designed a model in order to test riveting techniques.
Based on these preliminary research studies and tests, we were able to devise specific guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of the planned restoration activities.
